Royale Opera Time - Piece Watch

Beat me with a stick! I just had to plod through Manufacture Royale's nine page long bloody press release - only to have reasserted what they mention in the first few lines; that they are "unashamedly elitist." Wipe my brow and hand me an ol' timey hallucinogenic absinthe, because I need to lay back in a hammock on a steamship and read some Jules Verne to appreciate this steampunk mechanaut. More images after the break...
Oh how right it would be for the good people behind the conception of this watch to redo their text and branding on the watch. It is a cool thing, and the overgrown child in my loves this oddity - but they really need to take it down a few notches. I kid you not, in a nutshell the brand would have you believe that this watch not only sets the bar upon which all future watches must be judged, but also claims that according to the designer this watch release is one step closer to realizing a dream of utopia. Please calmly take an axe to my forehead - for I cannot believe this.
Ok, let's get back to the subject at hand. Manufacture Royale takes inspiration from Voltaire. Yes, that Voltaire - a man that at one point they refer to as the "Super Salesman." They should have just called the watch "Voltaire." That would have been better than making it look like a wrist catapult and for some reason calling it the Opera (well it does have a minute repeater complication).

It also appears that Manufacture Royale (with cheese), has been influenced by the designs of fellow watch brand Louis Moinet. Both seem to be focused on the "age of enlightenment" (and limitless coffers). Another nod to fantasy is the Manufacture Royale logo. Above the "MR" letter is a curved line with the handle of a sword coming out of it. This is the sword in the stone - Excalibur from Arthurian legend. Make of this what you will. I just smile and think of the Disney cartoon. Does Merlin come with the watch? Perhaps a little Archimedes? Owls seem to be really "in" right now.
The Opera Time-Piece (how MR officially calls it) contains a brand new movement that is manually wound, has a tourbillon and a minute repeater. It was designed by the good people at Fabrique du Temps. Built of 319 parts, the movement is quite nice looking. I do enjoy the silicon escapement, and the combo of brass in various tones and finishes. Makes for a very rich look. While nicely conceived, it is not quite as unique as the watch case, but is still quite attractive. Power reserve is said to be in excess of 100 hours. Plus, the minute repeater plays the hours in A, and the minute in C sharp.
Now comes the interesting part. See how the case opens up like the bellows of an accordion? This unique design feature is made to create a resonance cage/chamber to allow for the minute repeater to sound more lively. The unfortunate reality is that the complexity of many minute repeaters is diminished by the tinny sound they make after being cased in a watch. The modern needs of a watch with water resistance (as well as the desire for precious metals that absorb sound) has made it a challenge for watch designers to come up with cases that adequately allow for minute repeater complications to sound decent. For Manufacture Royale had to convince engineers to develop this ultra complex style of articulating case. We can call it the "Beetle shell watch case."
The watch case itself is 50mm wide done in 18k rose and gray gold. It has three sapphire crystals and 60 pieces in its construction. Everything about this watch is crazy. It is weird and wonderful. Ugly and beautiful. A novelty for true collectors, only 12 of these watches will be made - making way for other future Manufacture Royal watches. I really do appreciate the audacity of the men behind this watch and brand. There is a hefty amount of silliness here. They make little attempt to hide the fact that this is one eternally ostentatious toy. The watch comes in a veneered wooden box that is said to be a reproduction of the Bastille Opera House in Paris. In case you didn't detect it yet, the French are behind this timepiece. The price you ask? Well in Manufacture Royale's own words "just like the product - exceptional." And they aren't lying.... $1,200,000. My consumer gland just had an aneurysm.

Acer Iconia the Real Dual Screen Laptop

Acer Iconia will be the futuristic concept of laptop with their dual screen feature. which ditches the physical keyboard to get laptops to compete with the tablets style-on. Now, that may seem confusing, but then a laptop sans a keyboard could be dubbed a tablet, what say? Introduced at the Acer Global Press event in New York City, the concept laptop, called the Acer Iconia has two 14-inch touchscreen displays attached by a hinge. Scheduled to run Window 7, the laptop’s top screen functions as the primary screen, while the one below serves as a navigation panel, displaying things like the keyboard, touch wheel and on-screen controls etc, the display can also work as an extension for the primary display.

Here's the specification of this Dual Screen laptop named Acer Iconia.

The laptop weighing in at about 6.1 pounds features an Intel Core i5 480 processor, 4GB of RAM, 640GB hard drive and Clear-fi, a device networking intiative for media sharing. In addition to an Acer’s interface overlay – Acer Ring, which makes accessing documents and Web pages, resizing pictures and navigating through content library very easy, the laptop will have two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0, HDMI-out, a 1.3-megapixel Webcam and Bluetooth. Acer claims the laptop would be available in US markets by Christmas or latest by January, but also confirms that there will be no SDK available for it until December, so you may have to live with limited customized software Acer has designed initially.

Nokia E10 Concept - Rollout Display Phone

Nokia E10 Concept Phone - Nokia back with their newly phone concept. this Nokia E10 was come with a rollout display. this cool concept could be truly a new trends in cellphone design for the future. check out the picture of Nokia E10 Concept Phone below.

Usually gadgets with soft screen or scroll screen do not support touch control and one-hand control if the screen is very large. This inspired the designer to develop a portable gadget that would make the functions of a scroll screen simple and user-friendly on the go. Moreover, foldable phones are a niche that is new not only for users but for designers as well.

What makes it so special? First of its kind, the Nokia E10 phone features a bendable screen that works in two different modes, i.e. cellphone and tablet, thanks to the flexible, folding structure, to enhance the experience of the user. Now, users will be able to carry their tablet alongside the cellphone in their pocket. Locating three solar batteries, together with a lithium battery, at the rear, the futuristic cellphone ensures steady battery backup to support extended chatter and work sessions, while addressing the environmental concerns.

What’s in it for me? Employing a thin, flexible material, the screen rolls around onto a 6mm axis to save extra space and reduce the size, so you could carry it all the time with minimum fuss. When required, the Nokia E10 expands its screen to bigger dimensions (6.4 x 4.0 inch) to enjoy your favorite pictures, videos and movies in high-definition anywhere, anytime. While on the other hand, you can fold it up to make phone calls, send messages, emails, play games and do whatever you want like other normal mobile phones.

What’s next? The Nokia E10, together with Sony’s roll-up OLED display, has paved the way for a new line of gadgets that the users will be able to stretch, bend or morph into different shapes and sizes to meet their individual needs. Apart from the E10, Nokia is planning to incorporate nanotechnology in its high-end devices, such as the Nokia Morph, Concept to increase utility and reduce manufacturing costs in coming years.

Designers Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin spent six years deliberating over the cycle helmet-hairdo problem, and have come up with Hövding - a helmet that sits not on the head but on the shoulder of the wearer and remains invisible until they have a collision.

Hövding is a discreet collar that the cyclist wears around the neck. The collar contains a folded airbag which is visible only at a collision. The airbag is designed as a hood that in case of an accident will enclose and protect the cyclist’s head. Release mechanism is controlled by sensors that register abnormal movements of the rider in an accident. Watch the video after the images for a demonstration.

The shell of the collar is removable and available in many different styles and fabrics and will be launched in new collections. Hövding is a practical, handy accessory that is easy to carry, is stylish and unobtrusive in its design, while it saves your life, says Anna Haupt.
The Hövding will cost you a cool $446.
